Vegetative Propogation of Uninfected American Beech
Jamie Simpson, Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management, University
of New Brunswick (email: h539g@unb.ca)
Dr. Judy Loo, Canadian Forest Service Maritimes (email: jloo@fcmr.forestry.ca)
Loo and Simpson are exploring the vegetative propagation of American
beech. Three methods are being tested: tissue culturing of buds from
mature trees, rooting cuttings from juvenile suckers and rooting cuttings
from root sprouts. The purpose of this study is to develop a technique
for the vegetative propagation of beech, and stems from a desire to
establish an orchard of beech trees that show resistance to the beech
bark disease. A number of beech trees showing resistance to the beech
bark disease have been located in the Greater Fundy Ecosystem, and these
trees will be used for sampling. This study is a first-step toward restoring
clear beech in southern New Brunswick.
